Can dogs eat mango? Everything you need to know
Can dogs eat mango?
Yes, dogs can eat mango! Mango is not toxic for dogs.
Only feed your dog the flesh of the mango. Remove the seed/pip and skin from the mango before giving it to your dog, as these may cause choking and intestinal blockage.
Is mango good for dogs?
Mango flesh is a safe snack for dogs when eaten in moderation, as an occasional treat. Mango has some health benefits as it contains vitamins A, B6 and C, antioxidants and dietary fibre. However, mango is higher in sugar than many other dog-safe fruits, so too much of it can contribute to potential health issues down the line.
How to feed a dog mango
- Remove the seed and skin
- Cut up the mango flesh into bite size pieces or slices
- Feed a few chunks to your dog as a treat
- Or freeze mango slices until firm for a refreshing summer treat
- Or add a few pieces of mango to your dog’s regular food
How much mango can my dog eat?
Dogs should be given mango in moderation, taking the dog’s size and activity level into consideration. Also consider all the other treats your dog may eat or have eaten that day, as treats should comprise only 10% of your dog’s overall diet.
- Small dogs should only have a few small pieces of mango once or twice per week
- Medium dogs can have a few medium sized pieces once or twice per week
- Large dogs can consume a few large pieces once or twice per week

The risks of dogs eating mango
Giving your dog too much mango at one time may cause a stomach upset, especially if your dog is not used to it. Always introduce a new food slowly and monitor for any signs of allergies or other ill effects. If your dog has a sensitive stomach, you can try feeding just a little mango to see if it causes any reaction.
Note that the seed or pip of the mango can be a choking hazard or cause intestinal blockage (become stuck in the intestines, potentially leading to a life-threatening condition), so don’t let them chew on it.
Too many treats in your dog’s diet can cause health problems over the long term, including obesity and diabetes. Treats, including healthy ones like mango, should only comprise 10% of your dog’s diet, and are best avoided altogether in dogs that are overweight, diabetic and/or on a prescription diet. Always consult your vet for nutritional advice if you are unsure.
